Field Experience in Psychology
(including ABA)
Field Experience in Psychology is a work-based learning experience that includes a significant training component as well as instructional time in the classroom.
Field Experience includes weekly class meetings and assignments. Field Experience is only available in the fall semester - please see the course schedule for class meeting times.
Guidelines for Field Experience in Psychology:
-
The student must have taken or be taking six credits in a related field of study.
-
The field experience must have a start and end date within the semester dates.
-
The student is responsible for securing her own field experience placement.
-
The student must complete the WITS Field Experience Application and be approved for her placement before registering for the course in Populi.
-
Students may earn a maximum of three credits through field experience. Field Experience is only available in the fall semester.
-
Students may continue the work with an internship in the spring semester.
-
A maximum of three credits of work experience can be applied towards the major (work experience credits cannot be applied to a minor).
To ensure that a work experience is indeed an educational experience, a Field Experience placement must meet the following criteria:
-
The employer must provide a formal training component in addition to on-the-job training.
-
The student will have a supervisor to provide guidance, mentorship and training throughout the semester.
-
The supervisor may not be a direct family member.

Applying for Field Experience:
Students must secure field experience placements on their own* and are required to apply for approval during the registration period before the start of each semester. To receive credit, the placement must be approved by WITS prior to its start, and academic credit is earned upon successful completion of course requirements.
Upon approval, students must register and pay for the appropriate field experience course on Populi.
*If you need assistance with finding a field experience placement, please contact Mrs. Shira Heideman at sheideman@wits.edu or 410-358-3144 x25. WITS does not guarantee providing field experience placement.
The application deadline is three weeks prior to the start of the semester in which you are planning to participate in the internship placement. Applications submitted past the deadline may be at risk of not being approved in time to meet registration deadlines.
